I was extremely bored and june bugs were all over the place and so I decided to see if my fish wanted some. my Carpintis was one of the cichlids that grabbed some but the thing was squirming and she couldnt fit the whole thing in her mouth and then she started to smash and rub the june bug up against a peice of drift wood untill she could swallow it. I wish I could have recorded it. Has anyone had one of there texas or other CA cichlid do something similar to live food? Is this a thing they do in the wild or do you think the texas could have learned this on her own? It was just really neat to observe.

mine do this with shrimp, worms and anything else too big to get down their mouths in one gulp.

BTW & FYI...there is no fish called carp. texas. There is herichthys carpintis & herichthys cyanoguttatus (the true texas cichlid). The carpintis is mistakingly called a green or blue texas...which, at best, is misleading.

I know texas is a different species than carpintis I just shortened it to carp. And i was just typing fast and I typed texas behavior so I added carp. too it.

I used to feed my midas june bugs. He would spit them out several times before he ate them. Not sure if there's any nutritional value for them but still fun to watch.

I dont know. Some people have said that insects have more nutritional value than most feeder fish.

yeah i mean its a wild insect why wouldn't it have nutritional value? insects usually contain very high amount of protein and other nutritional goodies, more so than most other foods, store bought crickets just dont tend to have a lot of nutritional value because they are housed in poor conditions and so have to be gut loaded to really be good for them (still not bad though)

that's cool to see , all cichlids usually do that . if i didn't have arms and you gave me a pizza to eat that would be hella cool to see :WHOA:. wait maybe not ....oh ya sarah , of course your right ,all bugs are protein even the poisonous ones , so be careful . i feed live insects every time i can catch them but if it doesn't seem right to you , it probably isn't ....
