My juvies from Ken Davis are growing out nicely. I bought two Carpinitis, one is close to 3" with the other around 2 1/2". The face of the larger of the two has developed this black coloring. Only way I could describe it, is it looks like he/she's got a 5 o'clock shadow. He/she has been like this for 2 weeks. I've never had these guys so I'm not sure if it's a normal dominance thing since the smaller of the two doesn't have it. I know a pic would be great but my camera died on me so I can't post any right now which really sucks. Anyone have any suggestions?

That is either stress, or breeding colors. I think females show more breeding colors than males. Half black is the norm for Texass that are either stressed or breeding...probably nothing to worry about.

It's a breeding dress.

Does it look like this?

This is my Carp when it was younger just as it was getting it's first dress.

Thanks for clearing that up. The pic CR posted is exactly what the one is showing. Not sure they're in the mood though since they're in there with 5 Trimacs:D

How do you sex these guys/gals? I searched but didn't come up with much.

Thanks again.

Females will have a black blotch in the dorsal fin. Same with the trimacs actually...

Yes, Carpintis do have a tendency to get it wherever they can....
Mine is paired up with my Super Red texas at the moment. Before that she was with
a Black Convict.

Well, I'm sure the Trimacs are all males so it could be possible one of the Carpinits is a female. My intention was to grow them out to keep the nicest male Trimac and male Carpintis. I better keep a closer eye on them then since I definately don't want any breeding going on in there.
