New Carpintis. About 4 inches. In a 125 with 6-8 other CA cichlids. Why the breeding colors? No other fish stay by him, no other Carpintis in the tank. --he's solo. He's prolly male cause no black on the dorsal fin.

Do they do this for other reasons sometimes?

Looks like a female in breeding dress to me, unless its the lighting, because I see a dark area in the dorsal.
Looks a lot like me female in spawning colors (below).

Ahhh!!!! You see black in the dorsal, then? So why she in breeding dress? At 4 inches? And why no male prompting this?

I'm just worried the fish is sick, or getting whooped. Got the fish lady week, went outta town for work all week, and I see this. So, I haven't been watching the tank at all for a week.

its a female texas really pretty at that . what other cichlids do you have in there with her ? they love to breed with anything !

I have a much larger Bifa, but 4 other similar size fish -- A Con, a Melanurus, a Midas, and a Breidohri. Oh, and there's also a Bocourti in there with her, too--same size but much older. All these fish are around 4 inches--except for the Bifa, that's around 8 inches.

So, I'm hearing concensus--my carpintis is a female--and she's in love.

Isn't 4 inches kinda small for this?

not small no. shes probably trying to breed with the either melanurus or the breidorhri.
