I was looking at my Carpintis the other day and noticed it has devoloped a black spot in the dorsal fin, can this
happen wth males also or only females? When it first showed up we believed it to be male as the vent (though small) looked
like a V but now is showing this Black dot, has me a bit confused.

Here is a picture...

Until yesterday I have never noticed this spot. I did move some young Midas into the same tank, all a little smaller but close to the Carpintis's size, so
I dont know if that could have any affect to the suddon showing of the black spot.

Looks female to me. Body shape and colortation including spot on dorsal fin. I have a very similiar looking one (avatar) that I always thought was male until it laid eggs.

Until today it has never shown the black spot. Last night I threw some young Midas in the tank because the heater in my 40b died and the Carpintis started chasing them around and has made it known that it runs the tank lol. Then this morning I noticed it was chasing some around a little here and there then noticed this black spot on the dorsal. Totally took me off guard since I have always read that Male Carpintis do not have the black spot. When it showed up it was about 3-4 inches and the vent looked like a V so we believed it male but now I am not so sure.

Well shoot. This whole time I thought I had a male. Glad I figured it out now, eventually I want to have a Carpintis Pair and had I not known I would have ended up ordering a bunch more females lol.
