Yea but i ve read that it might not happen that often in escondidos and mine was sold as an escondido. I ve also read that males have dots under the eyes and females have lines instead.
Is that any accurate?
Tbh when I had my carpintis sometimes the black on the dorsal would be non-existant, and a second later be there depending on mood at that size. However my girl kept it all the time once she hit 3in

I find the slope of the profile is a good clue, the females have a more streamlined profile, males steeper, here's a pair together below, in spawning colors, and note when spawning, both deveope color in the dorsal

I agree with axs377 that it looks female from the shape.
Even when very small, males tend to have a steeper profile. Below are the pair as above, but when they were only at most 2", and the males seem obvious to me.
