Hi all, I've been surfing the net trying to get some info on carpintis, Herichthys carpintis 'Escondido' in particular. Since i've always gotten answers here, im going for it again.
Do you know how many gallons a full grown pair would require? Or if i could keep a fully grown escondido with a fully grown Jack Dempsey. Cause i've got this one small JD that i know is going to grow up to be a stunner, and am thinking of selling the big boys (oscar&gold saum) before they eat the little guy, amazingly enough that hasnt happen yet.
Anyways seems im going on and on, bottom line if anyone could enlighten me about EL escondido, is it aggressive? tank size? isn't Rapps a solid breeder? I appreciate whatever you got for me (except ****) ;)

They are actually very aggressive...... it's not always feasible to keep a pair together long-term - one would often kill the other even after successful breeding. My Escondido'd mom killed the dad.....But there are always exceptions so....

They are aggressive! If you want to keep a pair I would do at least 120g as they do get big! I think average size is 14", I think!

Also would recommend a divider for when one gets grumpy on the other. Then when the time is right, take it back out and let them... You know!:D

As for keeping 1 Escondido and a JD? If the tank size is correct and hiding spots are plentiful you could try it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.... Good Luck!

min tank size id say is a 90 for a pair. Carpintis dont get as large as cyannogottus. Rarely a carp will male it to a foot. females most likely 8-9" and males 10-12". they are aggressive though so by themselves and some convict dithers id say a 90 AT LEAST. bigger is obviously better and a 125 would deffinatly be enough room.

i have two carpintis together with a bunch of other CA/SA cichlids. they are aggressive, but nothing crazy. in my experience, their temperament is that of other common cichlids (JD, oscar, GT, etc)

A JD of equal size could in most cases hold its own one on one with a carpintis. A pair is another story you would need twice as much room. As with any cichlid pair they are aggro when breeding other than that my Tex isnt that bad and actually gets bumped around by smaller convicts.

Good to know! I've wanted one of these guys for a long time.

I have a female escondido from jeff rapps and its a real looker. it is currently the bully of ca sa comunity tank with an heterospilious trying to be king

If your plannin on havin a show stopper JD I wouldn't recommend it, but imo an Escondido is a much more attractive fish. In my experience they are very aggressive, I had one kill a dovii and a polleni. My big boy is at a friend house (not escondido but still carpinte) and he flares at the GT in the 90 gal. beside him. He is one angry mofo haha
