Hi Guys, I noticed a few days ago my young carpintis had its mouth open more than normal. Taking a closer look I saw he had some odd looking growths in his mouth. I have never seen anything like it, they don't look like fungus which is the only mouth issue I know about. They are fleshy and just inside the lips. The top lip has one on each side and the bottom in the middle. On the top you can even see the growths protruding on the outside.

Any ideas? Could this be a wound from lip locking? Maybe even tumourous growths?

The water is all fine from tests etc, he is housed with similar cichlids.

Water is fine might not be water is free from bad bacteria. Most of our time we look as it as clear is good but no so true. Cichlids like to fight and dig the soil and that how bad bacteria get in their body. Why not move out the fish and treat. If problem still persist in your tank. You might need to do a clean up to solve the problem.

I'm pretty sure my water is fine. I also use a UV sterilizer big enough for a tank double the size. I also clean my gravel well. I have kept cichlids for many years so i am aware of what they get up to.. just never seen this.

Duck lip... hmm. what causes that? It is fair enough to say to treat but with what? I also saw some info on lip fibroma's... wonder if it is the start of that

Hi i have got the same problem with my Carpints mine got it when he started breeding read about that duck lip and i reckon it could be it

The term duck lips, seems to be the popular slang for acute columnaris disease, I had 2 beani die from it last year.
They first appear sluggish and their appetite slows, after the jaw locks, it take only a few days to die.
It has been suggested that too warm temps are a contributer. Both beani and carpintus come from Mexico, beani is the northern most cichid of Mexicos Pacific side. The disease showed up in the heat of last summer.
Below are pics of the beani, in sequence from healthy to just before death.

I am now keeping beani and carpintus in the low 70s, and will not use a heater at all in summer.
How fast is the flow through your UV? In order to be effective, the flow should be very slow, otherwise there is not enough contact time for the UV to kill and bacteria that passes.

my carpintis has had this for mounths and it could of been the temp as i had just uped my temp around the time he got it to get them to spawn my LFS told me it was cotton mouth and i treated for that and had no effect then they adviced a course of melafix and a salt bath and that has not got rid of it so is this curable or not ?

My lyonsi had this (duck lips), its pretty much a guaranteed death. Texas cichlids are known for it. I have never been able to cure it, I have been told there is no cure, some people say they have, but I have yet to see it cured. My Lyonsi last about a week before she passed yesterday.
