Here it goes - I recently got 4 young unsexed ~3.5" carpintis from Ken. They are in a 120 with a few larger CA that totally ignore them. The plan was to keep a pair and get rid of the "extras".

A couple of days ago I threw a 1.5" female con (long story) in the tank. Since yesterday I noticed that one of the carpintis started to show breeding color, and occupied a small territory. It chases everybody away, but the female con stays close.

Today they both dropped tubes. Two young fish of different species. Really weird. I don't even know if the carpintis is a male or not!

Is this even possible?

From what I heard cons are willing to hybridize with many totally different species. I think on another site I have seen jag x cons

Cons will breed with anything!I currently have cuban x con hybrids

carpentis are well know for hybriding with anything in tanks too, so deffinately not surprised.

Ive had a reg Tex and convict pair up twice(different fish) before. Saved one of the fry to see what he would look like. He's about 2'' now.

Also, got a female salvini that just paired up with a make con and laid eggs today. I'll use em as feeders and save a few to grow out and see what they look like. There was even a female con in the tank with this pair. Guess he got tired of the same ole thing....:naughty:

That's just it - there are three other carpintis in the tank and he chases them all to the corners!

Any chance of a picture of your 2" hybrid? :naughty:
