Anyone know of a reputable source to purchase these guys from? I bought an Escondido from Rapps a few years ago and loved it, but he doesn't have any on his stock list now. My RTM killed that one and I would like another. This one will be in a 90g by himself. There also appears to be a few other variants out there since I last looked...Vontehillo, Chairel, Lahillas, etc. Any real differences between all of the variants or is it splitting hairs? Thanks for any info.!

im looking to do a peaceful tank and am looking into carpintis as well. check www.cichlidconnection.com he has alot more than what is on his list just email him and ask for specifically what your looking for.

as for the different locals, there isnt TOO much difference but there are some. escondido and vontehillo are probably the more popular ones

From what I understand vontehillos and escondidos are the same fish collected from different sites that are just upstream/downstream from eachother. No big difference if any.
As far as putting them in a peaceful tank, from my experience, peacefulness goes right out the window when they get mature. Some are stinking MEAN. The 2 juveniles I'm growing out aren't aggressive at all though.

Go on aquabid, a gentleman by the name Cavamart (same name on here) usually sells the "vontehillo" variety. I bought mine I had from him, can't beat the colors and I also bought my HRP from him as well.

Thanks for the informative responses. Cichlidconnection does have several varieties listed on the stock list. No Escondidos...although it sounds as if the Vontehillos may be the same thing? I may go that route. I'm just concerned about it being as colorful and beautiful as the Escondido I got from Rapps.

Anyone know why the Escondido variety is suddeny out of the picture? Just curious.

Ahh...sounds like a reasonable theory. Maybe I should hold out for Rapps or somebody to have a new batch of WC ones...assuming that is a possibility in the foreseeable future.

Doubt you will see any wild caught ones. There are some listed on aquabid. Cichlidsoftheamericas.com usually has them in stock as well. Not sure of any others that have them available right now but they are usually not reall hard to find.
