Latest on the breeding front. I had a whole tank full of the dad's I grew out and an Aquatop heater malfunction wiped everything out. I just happened to have this guy pulled ahead of time because he got hurt getting chased by a rabid pleco.

Thanks....can't wait to see how they develop. Very happy so far.

Just an FYI, for my carpintus, I didn't use heaters (only room temp), and kept some, to grow out, in outside tanks in Wisconsin, spring and into the fall, where water temps would fall into the low 60sF, with no ill effects.
Some carpintus (mine were Chairel) come from areas in Mexico where night time air temps fall into the 50sF, keeping average water temp on the low side, especially those lagoons influenced by mountain runoff.

In warm water (80ish F) they seemed to get more aggressive, and prone to bacterial, and fungal infections, so anytime I could go sans heaters l would. I find heaters to be some of the most easily aquarium gear to screw up (especially in the "on" position, and kill fish).

That is some awesome info there! Thank you. I do frequent water changes (2nd non paying full time job...lol), and haven't had any problems with the pure stuff as far as infections and such, but the no heater thing is gold. I've been trying to figure out a way to cut back heaters for electric bill purposes. My tank count spiked up to 80 after breeding flowerhorn and keeping a good 2/3 of those tanks around 84 degrees kicked my arse. It's a basement fish room so even if it's 70 degrees in there, it still seems bottom tanks on rack are freezing. I've dwindled my flowerhorn way down though and fixing to regroup. I still have a few flowerhorn pair but not aggressively breeding them, and some red texas projects, but outside of that all pure stuff.

duanes duanes Did the cooler temperatures curb things on the breeding front? I have some that I turned stones over for a year to find and I haven't even been able to get them to pair yet since I got them. It's like a sumo wrestling match for as long as I leave them together. Not the typical t-boning trying to take chunks out of each other. These are pond descendants and your comment about the temps being on the low side in the lagoons just clicked on the light bulb over my head as I was reading it again.

I believe cooler temps (rains)may be a breeding season trigger, at least that seemed to be a signal to mine.
The part of Mexico these cichlids come from, could be thought of as more sub tropical (especially in the central area where mountain runoff influences water temp), so may experience more drastic seasonal changes than truly tropical species.
I believe it also may have been the initial cool temp drop into the 60s, and then subsequent warm up to the mid 70s.

The other ones I am referring to, from what I've read are from the Pantepec region. The only real info I've been able to find on them is they were found in a 'crocodile pond'...lol. A previous seller years back on Aquabid named Rainbowrunner was selling them. He disappeared and so did the fish. Insane pearling and blues compared to other Carpintis species and from what I've been told by the few that still have them, they're a real challenge to breed. I've had better luck pairing flowrhorn.
