I am curious, what plants are safe to our other house pets that will help with the nitrate in the water? Just seeing what everyone else has done in these situations.

Yeah that's why I thought he was asking for an alternativeTechanically pothos isn't pet safe.
It has some form of a light toxin that causes nausea, vomiting and diarreah. Not as bad as death but still not a good weekend.

I am using pothos. My dogs dont go in the basement, and my cat doesnt mess with plants or like water very much so he stays away from my sump.I kept up my research, found out Swedish ivy is not toxic to pets. So, I invested in some and planted my sump. Also have a small grow LED that will be here tomorrow. Put it on for 6hrs starting out and go from there. Will do an update.
Alot of cats are like that.Girlfriends cat loves to eat plants for some reason. So, I had to be safe.
