Hi all,

A while back I got on board the pothos/devil's ivy train for reducing nitrates, and it has been truly superb. However, I will soon be (welcoming?) two cats into my household, and I unfortunately have to ditch the pothos in case the cats eat them and die.

While I don't really care about cats, I'd rather not also die when my gf kills me in this scenario.

So I just wondered if anyone could recommend a cat/dog safe plant to stick in the sump filter area, that could be suitable?

Might not be as effective as pothos, but such is life I guess.

Thanks :D

I've had pothos in my house for decades with multiple animals including a couple cats. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I wouldn't worry about pothos as they are considered toxic because of the calcium oxalates they contain. I would liken it to eating fiber glass. It could lead to irrataion but not likely death, your cats will learn quickly to avoid it.

Pennywort is a invasive plant in the UK, I know there are some restrictions I just don't know the specifics, do some research before buying,

I think that is only floating pennywort

After a bit of reasearch the native(UK) pennywort is Hydrocotyle vulgaris

Granted the OP resides in Scotland

Peace lily's work well
They are only mildly toxic causing irritation if swallowed not death.
