Just got my 5in Tigrinus Cat. Problem is my TSN is 8in and much thicker than the Tig and physically capable of downing him. They will in a 265 gallon tank. Is my TSN likely to consume anything that fits in his mouth including my Tig? I would hate to get rid of my TSN but That would be a very expensive meal. Thanks

It wont work... 100% sure! The TSN will eat the Tigrinus for sure.

agreed...my 16 inch TSN ate my arrowana who was only slghtly smaller than he....an expensive feeding indeed

do you have a random tank laying around that you could try and grow your tigrinus up in? or somesort of divider. Yes i know a divider would be huge in a 265 but then you wouldnt have to get rid of any fish.

I'd prefer you keep the TSN, at least it would have a good home and not end up in a 55 or something like that.

This is pretty biased information, nothing is certain in fish keeping. I've done many grow outs with size gaps like that with my shovelnose over the past 4 years with no problems. Not saying it's that way for everyone but it can be. As long as you feed both plenty I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I've also found that frequently people lose arowanas to TSN's but they are slender body fish, I've never found one of my catfish to try and eat another catfish tank mate or in general any other larger fish to mess with my catfish tank mates. Just like in the wild most catfish aren't on the menu of other fish species and seldom are they canibalistic towards their own species. If you have a 265 put a divider in the tank for now and keep the Tig seperated while it grows up some that way you don't have to get rid of either if you're that worried about keeping them together. ~Trent

the tsn will grow faster and bigger than the tig so separating wont work imo my 8" tsn tried eating my 5" columbian shark cat (got in fresh is now in brackish before the flaming ) and he is very stocky, i dont think its worth the risk, tsn are common and fairly cheep (in uk anyway) so get rid of the tsn and if you change your mind later on get a smaller tsn

Like I said, it doesn't always work out good but it can work without problems. It's just a matter of how bad you want to keep both fish and your tank space i.e. other tanks to grow them out in. When my Tig was first put in my 240 it was 9" and my TSN was about 16" and I never had any problems. I moved my TSN out to my pond at 24" and at that point the Tig was 16". So the growth rate is much more important at really small sizes because the TSN will grow 2" a month or so and the Tig probably only about 1" a month but over 1ft my TSN grew about the same rate as my Tig did roughly. Let us know what you decide to do ~Trent
