Barbels are like fins. If the tissue is damage, they will regrow, depending on the severity of the injury. Tips grow back very quickly, but if an entire barbel is lost it will probably never regenerate to 100% length.

Yes they will grow back. My Ecat likes to burrow a lot and will some times break the tip off one or more of its whiskers. They always grow back with in a few weeks.

They do grow back quickly given good water conditions and healthy feedings
