Hey guys, I'm interested in getting a decent sized catfish for my 180 gallon tank. I'm really interested in shovel nose cats (or cats like them) but would like some sort of nice pattern. Please post a pic with any suggestions. Also, tank dimensions are 6' by 2' by 2'. And I'm not a beginner cat keeper so your suggestions don't have to be easy to care for. I'm up for a challenge. Only thing is that it should be able to live with rays.

Any of these would do well in a 180: lima shovelnose catfish, Leiarius pictus, Pimelodus ornatus, the larger Synodontis cats (S. frontosa, S. clarias, S. notatus, etc.) several Ageneiosus species, and several Chrysichthys species.

Just picked up a lima and juruense yesterday for myself, both pretty cool cats you could check out :)

marble sailfin cat would be good. THey grow like absolute tanks lol

The marble sailfin aka Leiarius marmoratus grow to over 2 feet, too large for the footprint you have. Any number of rapheal catfish would work. The irwini looks good and get pretty big as well. You should really find yourself some cats that max out under 15" to make sure they have plenty of room to swim and move when spooked.

Yes do NOT put a leiarius pictus in a 180. I have two and they are just too active for that tank and grow too large. I mentioned in your thread about the walking catfish that you should try a bullhead. They have whiskers very similar to the walking catfish and are native so they are legal to own. Any synodontis would be good or even pimelodus blochii (four line pictus) cats would be good as well.
