I am wondering if there are any cats out there that stay in the 6-8" range maybe even a little smaller. I am hopefully going to be stocking a 55g with some africans, not sure what, and wondering how a cat would do with them, some suggestions on what kind and how big they get.

Also since this will be my frist cat I would like to stay with something kinda basic, nothing real rare or expensive yet...

Do cats do fine by themselves or better in a pair?

What about the Spotted Raphael Catfish. They grow slowly, very peaceful and max out at 8". Did I mention that they grow slowly? They are shy too and usually nocturnal but very very cute

Definetly go with a Pictus or 3... stay in the 6" range, cheap, availible at every LFS and Walmart etc...

Awsome cat for it's size - I usually prefer my cats to get bigger than a dog though but I still have 5 pictus ;)

a:iagree: a pictus is all you need

Pictus cats would be great. But if you want to stick with the African theme, try a Synodontis species.
