i think its a new adaptation because if it was a defect it would atleast have the eye marks.those dents that some of the gold fishes without eyes have. i might be completely wrong though

If you look closely it actualy does have the marks where the eyes should be.

But the blind cave fish do also and its an adaptation.

Think this fish was just born without eyes, it happens

I've had several different species of catfish that I bought without eyes, and one after it died I prepared the skull and it still had a normal skull with space for full eyes. I still have a one eye jur right now. No indication that there was ever more than one eye. To hide he just puts the side without an eye towards you. If you go to the other side of the tank where he can see you he will freak sometimes.
