So, I go fishing a lot. And lately I have been able to catch 100+ yellow perch a day. Now I personally find these little guys dandy on my own dinner plate, but that's a lot of fish if your only feeding yourself and maybe another person perch.

So I got to thinking, and I was wondering about catching perch as feeders for my rtc and rtcxtsn.

Good or Bad idea?

And what would be better, keeping the perch live and feeding them that way, or freezing them first? The issue with freezing them, is that my hybrid will still only eat live, since thats how the guy I got them from was feeding them...

You'd have to cut the back spines down to the body with poultry shears.

And there could be little nasties you might give your fish anyway.

If you are going to do it anyway, make sure you cut those dorsal spines off. They will mess your fish up.

Personally I would use them as feeders... but ... BUT <--- Big one, I would fillet them and freeze them. it will kill off any "nasties" as were mentioned and also cut back on you having to feed them ;) which means cheap food for your Cats, I would get started on getting that Hybrid off of live foods ASAP BTW as your going to really start spending a small fortune soon.. then a large one just to keep him fed (AND the possibitie of your fish getting sick goes WAY up when you use Live feeders, but I'm sure your well aware of that  )

I've used Bluegills and Sunnies in the past for O's, Gar, and Wood Cat.

Cleaned and FROZEN proir to feeding. Cheap and entertaining way to get food.

Wonderful! thanks guys.

And I know I need to get the hybrid off feeders... I hate giving them those damn goldfish... I just wanted to make sure he was settled before I tried to wean him. But cheap food would be wonderful.
I already have some frozen perch fillets in my freezer. Those will be cheaper than the silversides I bought the other day that the hybrid wont eat...:irked:

I'm sure he will... now another question along the same lines...
Perch are freshwater, so not a big deal... but what about fresh water fish?
Like shiner perch or flounder bits? Also ok?

Did you mean SW fish? Silversides come from the ocean. FW fish will probally be cheaper than SW fare.

well... consider what most of us feed our Big Cats... Shrimp... they arn't freshwater shrimp :grinno: it's the Big ol Salt water monster shrimp :D

Saltwater fish is fine to feed to your fish...and it's surprising how cheap you can find shrimp and other types of Fish at the local markets :D
