Maine (so cold so very cold)
I've been reading some topics on a few forums and have found that some people go to CA/SA to catch wild cichlids. They catch them and bring them back to the states. I want to know how one goes and does that. Do you need a guide? Is there a company that will take you out to catch them? Do you need a permit? Im starting to get a lot of PTO (paid time off) and Im looking into taking a vacation. I've never been out of the country and thought this would be a great trip. If anyone has any info please let me know.

that sounds really cooll... im coming WITH!!!!

Eddie Martin of Bluegrass cichilids organizes trips to Central America, we have a trip planned to Honduras in May that still has a few spots open eddie@bluegrasscichlids.com. You get to go with seasoned veterens who know where the fish are, how to keep them alive and are licensed to bring them back into the USA legally. I am organizing a trip to Uruguay for next December, contact me at fishfarm@mindspring.com if you are interested in going to South America, this will be my 7th collecting trip. Ken

I'd have to get some ducks in a row in order to go to Uruguay. I cant get a passport by may or I would go to honduras. Let me look into a few things and I will get back to you.:)

Passports can be gotten in 3-4 days, you just have to know the right people (which I do), cost run from $2000-$2500 per trip for everyhting. flights, food, transportation, permits, ect. I've nailed down dates for Uruguay, leave Miami Dec 1st return Dec. 14th. Flight are overnight so you are in Uruguay for 11 days Dec 2nd-13th. Ken

do u run into locals? And if so how the south american ladies?

Here's my thread on the trip, there's always ladies, Western men attract them like bugs to a light. I've collected in Honduras, Mexico and Uruguay, the local people are always friendly and very curious as to why you want to catch little fish they consider bait. LOL Every where you go kids want to help. When you pull a seine you get tons of fish, lots of tetras and livebearers, catfish, plecos and cichlids, You sort out what you want and release the rest. Different people want different fish. Ken
