Datnoid Island
There doesn't seem to be a stickie with any info so I'm hoping this thread could he the start of one. I have a giraffe nose catfish that has been acting weird, almost like he's in pain. I've noticed what looks like an open wound on his stomach and near his top fin. I don't know how. He's in a tank with Datnoids and I don't believe they could cause that. He could have scraped it on wood. My question is this. How can I treat it safely and effectively to minimize the chance of infection? I know salt is supposed to be a no no since they are scaleless but could a half dose truly hurt them? Or should I just pick up some mela fix and be done with it?

Try just a teaspoon per gallon but ensure you dissolve the salt completely first before you add to the tank. Dissolution is very important.

Ok. I just don't want to harm him in anyway. Maybe I'll start with a teaspoon per 5 gallons and slowly add more. And btw, I didn't realize there was profanity in that video, sorry.

A teaspoon per gallon is much more effective in preventing the bacteria from infiltrating the wound. Ensure tank is bare bottom as well since the bacteria harboring around substrate will only aggravate the situation. When the wound had completely closed itself and fin healed, you can return the fish to its main tank.

Thanks bro. Much appreciated. I do think we need a sticky for this kind of info on cats. I don't think a lot of people are aware of the side effects of over dosing salt with cats.

Anytime I saw my old achara cat breathing heavy or shedding slime coat id add salt by the fist full with no ill effects. In fact he would be in better shape within the half hour. Just my 2cents as I don't know anything about cats not tolerating salt....

It's just because they are scaleless. Salt supposedly "burns" their skin but it's the only safe natural way I know how to treat and prevent infections. I hate using meds of any kind

I have used salt with cats many times over the years with no problems. What does it do to them?

It's ok to add 50mg salt per gallon during water change. I have also used salt on my Tigrinus catfish with no issues. I guess its the process of your catfish getting used to the addition of salt.

People say salt is a no no for catfish bc they have no scales. Very much like a clown loach. I assume it burns their skin. This is why I'd like some experienced fish keepers to chime in with some good info and get a nice stickie out of it
