I was just wondering every time I feed my cat he will swim around the tank like a crazy mad man in circles and everything for while before he actually finds his food. Do they have bad vision?

my rtc does that sometimes but then he scarfs it down.

CATFISH are literally covered from head to tail with sensory organs. The barbels and most of the body are covered with taste buds. The back of the eyes are coated with a layer of crystals that reflect light. The lateral line detects vibrations in the water. Electroreceptive pores cover the head region and the lateral line. Their sense of taste is unbelievable. Their sense of smell is unparalleled. Few fish hear as well, and catfish also have excellent sight and a superb sense of touch. Don't let the wandering fool you ... they are simply figuring out if its something that they want to eat!

ok now i even i know why my catfish swims all around the tank when i put food

Turn out all the lights let your eyes adjust to the dark, and start throwing in pieces of raw shrimp. They don't even need eyes. I've even kept catfish with no eyes, and they eat better than ones with eyes.

did you copy/paste this?

but yeah, my syno might miss something right next to him, but as soon as his barbels hit an edible morsel, he is on it. sort of like bichirs

A catfish smell it's extremely well... Catfish detect some compounds at one part per 10 billion parts of water. Which is kind of like you being able to smell a hershy's kiss in a football stadium... Awsome isn't it? :D

Plus the taste buds function in two ways. Those covering the body(average over 5000 per square centimeter) help catfish locate food, even in dark, muddy water. They detect chemicals from nearby food that help them close in on the potential meal. Then, when they get near, the whiskers are used as “feelers” to cautiously sample the food. If everything’s cool, the catfish mouths the item. Taste buds in the mouth then determine whether the food item is edible. which with something like an RTC they think EVERYTHING is edible
