@OP: you are essentially describing Necrocanis' project. He has been interested in this and preparing to do this for a decade or more. He knows most about cat hybrids by many heads over anyone I came across. He collaborates with Dr. John Lundberg on this topic. They think that they may find out something useful in the immune system study of cat hybrids.

As you notice, there aren't many hybrid kinds known and out of those 1 in 10 or less kinds is even viable. It is not understood why some catfish from different families produce viable hybrids and why it is so rare, although the science had thought it was impossible at all (to cross species from different families / same order) not so long ago.
Surely, farmers have tried hundreds if not thousands of combinations of cat species in one family or even one genus and different families, including second gen hybridization (hybrid x pure species), etc.
For the record, I am anti-hybridization, mostly for ethical reasons. Many think it is ok.
