Bought this catfish last week as laulao catfish(brachyplatystoma vailantii). I do know fish came from seagrest farms. But I have some doubts to the true identity of this fish as I have had a similar looking fish in the past that was about 10in and was sold to as vailantii then. This fish looks very close to duopalatinus peruanus so did the larger one I owned. But pc maxes that fish out a 6in roughly so I'm still not certain. I'm beginning to think they sell multiple fish under vailantii species. Let me know what you guys take is on this fish. Also gonna include photos of the larger one I had.

Selling a fish under a name and verifying the ID are two different things. But I do agree multiple species are likely sold as vailantii

Agree. Just pointing out that this fish looks exactly like larger supposed vailantii I received a while back that vendor swore up and down was true vailantii. I see all types of Id issues with this fish on here and other sites as well. Even the pic on pc of baby vailantii doesn't look brachyplatystoma to me. Think I'll go through wes next time for this fish

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter thoughts on this fish?
Agreed. IME, only Wes (and Primo Aquatics had one 1.5' once) brought in true vaillantii as of recent.

Neither fish in the OP belongs to the Brachyplatystoma genus, from what I can see.

The max sizes on PCF are our collective doing... and I'd go even as far as say our responsibility - I'd say photograph the fish with a ruler next to it and post on the PCF for ID confirmation and updating of the max size in the PCF Cat-eLog.

The max sizes posted on PCF are those largest ever reliably reported. But yes, IIRC duopalatinus is not know so far to exceed half a foot by much, maybe 7"-8". You could change that.

I'm curious what reference you are using for Duopalatinus. I've had a hard time finding reliable images of that species.

Now I really want a duopalatinus ... Well done people!-)

Are you saying if I buy a vaillantii I'm likely to get one?

I can only say if you order from seagrest or bluegrass...this is what will come. The larger fish I had a while back came from exotic fish online.

I'm in the UK so a little more complicated here. Cheers anyway.
