hi guys

im currently in the process of setrting up a 100g tank which will have a few SA cichlids in and a lot of L number plecs, but i also want to add another type of catfish, but one that isnt going to have my small l numbers away. my friend is in the process of building a tropical pond so i could i have a tiger shovelnose or would that have my smaller l numbers away?

with thanks
Matt

Id suggest leaving out the tiger shovelnose and just enjoy the plecos a tiger shovelnose would eventually eat most of the other fish in the tank that fit in its mouth and it would probably try the ones that didnt fit as well

what about a jaguar catfish? i know they shouldnt get too big but i was just wondering about how predatory these guys are?

Matt

i would go megaladoras irwini, or pimelodus ornatus. id sharks tend not to do so well with cichlids. also maybe a pair of suncats instead. i have a pim. ornatus and love him, they are the coolest fish, get around 14 inches max in captivity too. if you know you will have the pond in a few years(like 2) then go ahead with the irwini, but be carefull, they might grow fast.
as for predatory and ornate pim is like a mini rtcxtsn, very predatory, mine ate a dozen tetras his first day in the tank, like chase them down and eat them no sit and wait

thought it might, what about a giraffe catfish? theyre less predatory arent they?

Matt
Giraffe cats are not at all aggressive and do not eat smaller fish, although they get very large and would need to be rehomed within 8 months (assuming it's purchased at around 4").

meglodoras irwini are pretty cool.

anymore suggestions?
Megalodoras irwini are also non-aggressive, and they are extremely slow growers, so you would have years before it would have to be rehomed (again assuming it's purchased at a small size).

what about a pangasuis catfish/id shark? i know these get big but how predatory are they?

with thanks
Matt
Pangasius catfish will eat anything that will fit in their mouth (and the can fit some pretty large prey into their mouths) and would need to be rehomed in 4-12 months depending on the species and size they are purchased at.

Jaguar cats would be your best option that you have mentioned so far. They stay between 5 and 7 inches long and are really too small to eat anything over 2 or 3 inches.
