Hey everyone...I'm going to be setting up a 300-400g aquarium next year when we buy a house and i'm starting to do some planning now for it. The dimensions of the tank i'm thinking of having made would be 96x36x30...I love catfish and just wondering what "larger" cats could I keep in this size tank for their life. I'm not looking to cram a large cat that will just fit in there...want it to be happy and healthy so when I say larger I don't mean huge. Any help from you guys would be appreciated. I do like the typical catfish looks as well...I was looking at the Jaguar cats and really liked them but was having a hard time finding good info on them.

If you mean a marmoratus catfish then a lot of people keep them in tanks this size or smaller but a lot of people have said that because of their really long barbels they can feel confined if they becoming nervous and skittish. Are you looking for something that looks nice or one that's interactive?

I think I'd rather have one thats more interactive over decorative...i'd rather have personality...the catfish I was talking about is listed as Liosomadoras oncinus on aquascapeonline.com. However it does seem shy so I might go another route.

What about sun cats? Are they more on the shy side? Also what is the max size on them...some sites say 10" and others 18"...I like how they look...kind of like a channel catfish which I would love to have but definitely wouldn't have the room with the tank I'm getting.

Yes they are really shy, never had experience with sun cats so can't help there buy I owned an ornate cat and it was awesome to own and small, there are to types so I will find more info on them and get back to you :)

Thanks...what would the max size for cat be in a 96x36x30 size tank? just so I have a ballpark adult size when I'm looking at options.

No problem, it depends on how you want to keep them, I would say 1.5-2" max depending on the fish and its habits but 1.5 would be much more comfortable :)

I would be looking for something I could keep for its entire life so I'll stick with something 1.5' and under then.

Chrysichthys ornatus is the name of the 1 I was telling you about earlier, I will find you a care sheet, here's some pics
