Here&There
:nilly: I am trying to decide on a catfish to add to my tank, but the taxonomy/common name BS is confusing me. I want a Perruno/reticulated pimelodid(-ella) catfish... see what i mean. I have found the above names in various combos listed as common names. Latin names include Leiarius marmoratus and Perranichthys(sp?) pictus. I DO NOT want a/the marbled sailfin that has the cream colored nose-to-tail stripes as a juvy. I may also be getting confused by dif in pattern of juvy and adult.
ANYWAY... If anyone could lay it out all nice and neat, I would appreciate it. (Pics would help) Or just spoon feed me a link that will help. Thanks in advance.

there are two species that are bassically identicle. The most common import and quite frankly the only one of the two I have ever seen in the hobby is Leiarius longibarbis, formerly leiarius marmoratus. Leiarius pictus is the sailfin variety that you do not want. Perrunicthys perruno is what is commonly qouted in the hobby, but due to scientific fact I discount most attempts to claim this species. So what you will want to look for is leiarus longibarbis, but it may be listed under perrunicthys perruno or just perruno catfish. Either way you will be safe. Hope this clears up some confusion if you have more questions just ask.

I have one, I bought it under the name Marbled cat for $12 went from 1.5" to 10" in about 6 months. He has since stopped that and is growing at a normal pace. I dont really like him much as he gets real stupid at feeding time and tends to cause a ruckis all the time. I dont think he'll be around much longer though as I've seen the tell tale signs of RTC jaw prints on his sides. Shouldnt be long till he's supper. He's only an inch or so smaller but you know those RTC's, they eventually eat everyone :D
