catfish voltage??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im not sure but i just got one today for $12 hes 4 inches. What ive heard is they rarely reach more than a foot long in a fish tank but can cause pain in your hand for a few days. Friend of mine has a 9 incher with small africans and a gt with no problems. Buy a volt meter

Iv'e kept both Malapterus electricus and M.microstoma, both have the capability to hit 24inches plus in captivity,i would expect 250-300 volts from an adult.
Best kept alone!

I've done alot of research on these fish and talked to very educated ppl, one being a lfs owner. he said to expect maybe 16 inches but any bigger is rare.

their are several ppl. out there with 18in+ specimans out there, do a little more research and keep yours in good health and in good condition for a good amount of time and watch it blossom to WELL OVER 16IN.

P.S. a lfs owner doesn't qualify as a VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE person most of the time they only deal with merchandise they keep in their tanks until they sell

Malapterurus electricus can grow up to about 39" and produce up to about 350 volts. This may not be scientific but 39 into 350 equals 8.97. So you could say that for every inch of fish that you have it could produce up to 8.97 volts. So an 8 inch fish could in theory produce 71.76 volts.

AQUAMONSTER

I have heard a lot of people saying that Malapterurus Electricus will only get to 12 inches in an aquarium, but that is just a myth. I have had 2 M. Electricus over the last 20 years and both of them have reached well over 12 inches. The first at 21 and now the second at 14. They may not reach full size very quickly, but given time and right nutrition they will become a monster.

Here are some recent pics of Homer when I moved his tank.

Oh no I sorry I should had said that I lost the 21 incher named Mac in 1996 when hurricane Fran hit NC. We were out of power from 2 weeks. No matter what I did I could not save Mac. I was steadily pouring water into the tank with cup for aeration, but it was in vain. With no filtration the water quickly became foul. With no power the was no way to get clean water. I resorted to using rain water that had collected in some barrels, but my efforts were just not enough. Now I have Homer and thinking of getting another. They are my favorite fish for sure.

Those are some heroic efforts!
