The two largest catfish in my care one mine and the other another members have scratches on the side of their body right before the pectoral fins and on top of the body right before the dorsal fin. I have found the cause to be that they can't quite fit properly into their milk crate hides, so I have cut out larger openings for them. The cause of my problem( and theirs) will be fully remedied by tomorrow afternoon, for now only half of the hides have been fixed.

Okay, now to my question.

They haven't contracted any fungal or bacterial infections yet, so I would like to know what else I can do to help them heal unhindered. So far I'm doing every other day water changes of 100 gallons on a 300 gallon stock tank that they are in.

Also the scratches don't go past what looks like the skin layer of the catfish. The scratches appear white in color and looking closely I can see them shedding what looks like the slime coat that is in the immediate area of the scratches.

Thank You.

P.S. To be clear I would like to know the best way for them to heal as quickly as possible.

Can you get a pic?
What are your water parameters? Fish will flas from ammonia/nitrites and high nitrates. Is your PH stable?

Test your water. They may be rubbing themselves on objects due to bad water quality..............

They're not rubbing, for I'm sure i would notice catfish rubbing themselves when i watch them at night. Will post test results tomorrow afternoon.

Well, based on the test results it's doing a mini-cycle.

ya whats the best way to help a catfish heal? my ornate pim got bit by one of the jds, so hes now in the community tnak at my moms classroom. is their anything i should do to help him heal, his wounds are just past his skin level.

clean water, a little salt, and let nature take it's course in a good way that is. if you like go out buy a bottle of melafix that stuff always does a decent job in speeding up the process a lil

Ya, more frequent water changes.
