I have a 125 Maccourt Chesapeake one with koi and fantail goldfish. I have another and was thinking of pitting my cats out there but i havent been able to find a heating solution. Ive read that deicers are a terrible idea. Any suggestions

Welcome to the MFK!

Could you please elaborate and explain your situation and your problem / question? Are you asking how to keep a pond warm enough? For instance we'd need to know your location, size of pond, source of water, etc.

I live in Moore county NC and a have 125 gallon preformed pond. And was wanting to transfer my catfish to it for when they get bigger. They are under 10 inches. We live in a small house, for at least 3 more years until we build a house. The 125 gallon in the house, which houses a hybrid RTC and TSN, is almost too big for the house. I know they will be huge by the time our house is built. And i wanted to know how to keep the outdoor pond warm during the winters. North Carolina summers are ridiculously hot and the winters vary. Thanks for the welcome.

Firstly, welcome.

Unfortunately though my news will be neither helpful to your problem or what you want to hear so I do hope others can find a heating solution.
neither of the cats will make it 3 years in a 125 g tank indoors or 125 g pond outdoors, 125 g will cease being big enough to house them anywhere between 9 and 18 months. By which I mean there will be a good chance they will start to show deformities due to cramped living conditions.
I only know of very few instances where these fish remain healthy beyond 18” in confined spaces.
I would suggest that if the population on here do find you a suitable heating solution, such as building liner pond above ground and insulating not only the bottom but the sides too ( which will help against both heat and cold) then you will need to build something larger than your 125g just to get through the 3 years with this pair.

I appreciate the straightforwardness. The Maccourt pond is fairly wide, is why i figured they could at least have a little more space to move around than being in the 125 rectangle. I may have to install a 185 gallon coffee table in my living room. I was thinking about a 900 gallon Boswell show tank but i hadnt heard much about them.

The pond liner is my next project after the preformed. They are above ground with wall retainers and soil surrounding them. One has koi and the other has no habitants.

I got the TSN in September and the hybrid RTC in November, both were 3 to 4 inches.
I know the MFK community has strong backgrounds on big fish, thats why I joined. Here is where i found out the $2500 to $5000 dolphinhead is a deformity, not a rare fish, and to stay away from pet store feeders. I know i will get great advice here and not lose my cats again.

Cool. I looked around and couldnt figure out how to start a thread. Should have hit the help tab. Thanks for being helpfu. I knew i did right by signing up, rather than just visiting from a google search.

Keeping a pond outdoors in NC at tropical temps in the winter will be challenging. Still doable. These threads may give you some ideas:

C CatfishHunter33 How is the excavation going?

I’ve been looking into ways to keep water open during winter, and I’m wondering if anyone here has experience using a lake dock deicer for small or medium outdoor ponds. Does it work well for preventing full ice-over, and is it safe around fish? Would love to hear your thoughts or setups.
