I am new here and joined just to find an appropriate home for a Pacu, which I successfully did. In doing so, I became interested, or shall I say curious, in making my own outside fish pond. But I am hoping you all can help me with a few things before I start. I have two options for my starter pond, an old weathered (somewhat rusty) 100 gallon cattle trough and an old claw foot bathtub. The cattle trough is the most accessible and what I would like to use, but can fish live in weathered galvanized metal containers? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

If the metal tank is already a little rusty, once you fill it with water and it just sits there I would think it would become very rusty...and I can only assume that rust is not a great thing for fish...

Yes, thats what common sense would tell ya, but I know others have done it, and are doing it, and I dont see how unless they have a liner in the thing. I thought just maybe goldfish would be hearty enough not to care.

not only are metal containers prone to rust and leech chemicals, but they are poor at holding in heat. Check out plastic rubbermaid troughs. Those are great and cheap ($200 for 300g)
