I bought 4 "minnow/crayfish" traps hoping to get some crawdads to go fishing with. Out on the north platte river near Kearney Nebraska I caught 4 crayfish, 2 large mouth bass, quite a few carp, several "plains killifish" and 2 brook stickelbacks (neat fish). I grabbed some moss to provide some food... something that worries me a bit is that the moss is absolutely loaded with flatworms (I am assuming non-parasitic species).
Anyway... Am curious about providing food for my "bait" as I think I will probably keep them if I can but in order to see my critters I must filter which kills off alot of the live foods living in the moss =). I can't even seem to get water to turn green after using a plant fertilizer =P. I do get a white haze that settles in the bottom of a container tho. I believe this white stuff is "soluable potash".
Maybe I will have to buy some fertilizer specifically like this stuff which is made for growing salt/fresh planktons. Would I need the diatom mix?

I am a noob to fish keeping... have had some before but live food was feeders from the fish store not growing my own =) BTW the moss has loads of life most looks like miniature dragon fly larvae but there is some gamarus as well. Many critters too small to make out to...
