Cave Question for Africans

Hello everyone I am building a diy back ground for my 90 gal 48Lx18Dx23T
its coming along great so far and im ready to cut caves in.So far I have 7 spots picked out mostly on the bottom half.My question is, If I put caves on the top half will the fish use them or will they mingle on the bottom? If so what is a good spacing for them?Im thinking every 12" or so. I have never had Africans before so any info would be great.
Im not sure what speices im going with yet but probably pecocks.

Mbuna certainly would use caves higher up. Peacocks probably will, but not 100% sure. In nature, they tend to stay low to the sand as this is where they feed.

I notice when my Mbuna wish to hide, they stay low. But, having a completely different hiding area is a good idea.
