I would like to ask our bichir experts here at MFK what are the physical features/characteristics that we bichir collectors should know to determine whether a Polypterus Bichir Bichir is wild caught or is it a captive bred PBB from Indonesia?Thank you in advance to our bichir experts who will answer my inquiry.God bless!:)

Size for starters.
If it's small it's most likely CB.
Price.
Wild Caught is always best, and easy to spot. Big strong finlets, big head, size and a decent source.

Indo CB PBB are very easy to spot. They look low quality, and usually have bent up fin lets.
Big-In refuse to sell them anymore as they suspect one of the original parents was a Lapradei, the other a Turkana PBB passed on from Kamihata to outsource due to high demand in Asia (Mainly Indonesia and Singapore).

The first babies that were being sold from these breeders did indeed have a striking resemblence to Nigerian Laps.

PBB are not classed as "rare" anymore, so IMO there is no reason to but CB.
Even more so now that the last couple of years Kamihata have been mass producing them, giving up on their original F1 selective breeding program.
I guess its all about the $/¥...

Thank you sir tokyogasmask for your very informative and detailed answer to my inquiry.I'm really learning a lot from you sir.Happy bichir keeping.God bless!

How much do the kamihata mass produced pbb cost in japan?

Now they are very cheap. Even chain store LFS are knocking them out at ¥2500 ($25us) but they are IMO now no better than any other mass farmed fish.

Long gone are the days of Kamihata F1 premium PBB.
Whats being bred by them now are low quality in comparison.

Do yourself a favor and save a little more money and get a WC PBB.
