Not looking to start any bio media battles just wanted to ask what the best option would be in addition to my 440 scrubbies & 4 gallons of bio balls? I was thinking a big brick of Cell-Pore or say 15 liter's of Ehfisubstrat Pro in some media bags... I don’t have any experience with either but I'm looking to fill up the extra space in the return side of my W/D. The water won’t be flowing directly through the media but rather over the top it seems (see photo)

Thanks

I use Cell-Pore and Matrix (like Ehfisubstrat Pro) and honestly could not recommend one over the other. Without a true scientific study that accurately measures BB density per sq inch of bio-media, there is no way someone could recommend one biomedia over another.

The only drawback I see with these two biomedias is they clog over time. Cell-Pore is nothing more than a sponge dipped in a cement-like paste. A plain sponge would be better as you can squeeze out the crud.

I think "High-Tech" bio-media is just a marketing ploy. If I could measure BB, I would suspect that if I filled my canisters with gravel it would work just as well.

Maybe , the silicone covered gravel does not cultivate a damn thing. I would like to see lava rock compared to ceramic rings and bio balls that would be a good one.

I think Cellpore is foamed glass...the same stuff I buy at Home Depot to clean my grill. Personally, I consider it to be a slab of material in search of a mission.

I'd agree with this as well. I have no proof either but I've thought the same.

In fact one of my canisters has a bunch of tiny gravel in one of the trays and there is as much or more bacteria growth on/in the gravel as there is on any of my other medias.

E-mail them and ask what there BB per-inch is? A bold statement like that needs sciencetific measurments 2 back it up! I'm sure it's best guess on scrubbies and bio-balls. Less someone there would like to inlite'n us?

i use biomax. i read somewere i think that they have the greatest surface area. but i dont remember were it was. anybody know were?

Surface area changes over time. Once any hard-porous biomedia (e.g., CellPore, Biomax, Matrix, etc) starts to fill with fine crud; the aerobic BB per/sq inch diminishes. That is why the manufacturers suggest replacing the bio-media every 6 months (downside being that you are starting the BB culture from scratch). I know you can always back flush each piece of biomedia with a hose attached to a faucet, but the chlorine would kill off the BB.

I believe a plain sponge or scrubbies, periodically rinsed in tank water, is the best biomedia.

Ok- Thanks for everyone’s help! Still not sure witch way im going to go yet but I will for sure keep you posted.
