Will the concrete block pollute my tank? Is it safe? My friend says it is safe but I want a few opinions. thanks.

I was told recently that concrete is rather acidic and should be coated with a resin.

Concrete will change your water chemistry. Why would you want a concrete block in there? Going for an urban look? LOL

It's actually the opposite. Concrete blocks will raise the tank's pH. I've seen these blocks used to hold reef material in SW setups but, never in FW tanks.
For SW setups, the concrete blocks are recommended to be pretreated:

You can use concrete block but it needs weeks of pre-treatment to be useful. You can soak it in a vinegar solution for several days, followed by several days of soaking in freshwater... must rinse and repeat several times. In about three weeks to a month it should be ready to use. This method is documented in the Fosse/Nilsen Modern Coral Reef Aquarium v1 book.

I would suspect similar treatment is required for FW setups. And, the possibility of affecting pH must still be monitored by testing frequently.

hmm, oh well, so much for that idea. if i had a nearby stream i could put it in there for a while. urban look, yes, i like the urban look, ha.

Putting it in a stream would do nothing but expose it to contaminants.

30 ATFs for 1k? Doubt it. Way too cheap.

I know a vet that had concrette blocks in his tank for at least 10 years and it never had any bad effects on his tank I also know he did religous water changes every week like clock workit was a 500 and he changed about 10% once a week
