The molding is giving up the ghost and allowing the crossbeam to pull itself away from the glass. I have fashioned a temporary piece of metal that basically hugs the top together. I'd like to use this idea as a permanent fix, but should I distribute the pressure over a few inches across the top, like a sort of grip pad? I don't know if all that pressure on a finger-tip-sized spot at the top of the middle of the glass is a good arrangement. Should I just use a wide piece of metal? The gap between the lids in only half an inch, so I'm kind of stuck adding weight distribution 'grip pads' of some sort, aren't I?

Hoping for a direction to take that doesn't involve silicone...

I have a Perfecto tank with manufacture date label may 1987 that someone sawed the center off of. Hasn't caused any problems not having one for 23 years!

It generally does not cause problems when they break. My old 55gal never leaked. But it you are going to use the brace make sure it is flat as possible the 1/2 width is okay.
