Ceramic Bio Media in Wet Sump

When adding ceramic bio rings to a wet sump does it matter if they are bagged up in those mesh like bags? What is the purpose of doing this?

i think its for ease of maintenance. these can get clogged and require cleaning. its a lot easier to grab the whole bag rather than scoop them out individually...

media bags purpose is just to keep the media in one spot. i'm not sure you would have to worry about ceramic rings floating away, but thats the whole point of the media bag. also, prevents media from clogging things
