It works fine, only a problem in some filters because of it's small diameter. If this is the case you could use a mesh media bag.

What kind of filter do you have? What kind of tank are you filtering?

its a sea clear sump i think around 35 gallons and running it on a 180 gal 72x24 footprint

Are you planning on submerging the media, you would definitely want to use the mesh bags. If you are looking for large volumes of media(5 liters) you may want to looks at seachems pond matrix. If your sump is a wet/dry trickle filter then pot scrubbies are your best choice IMO.
