Where are you guys getting these ceramic rings from? i've heard they have a huge surface area, and i was thinking of putting them in my H.O.T. 250's media basket.

Basically in every LFS!!!!! i'll tell you what, these are the KEY to a filter. If you WC enough and you have enough Bio,then chemical filtration is NEVER needed, anyone who dissagrees had a high bio-load to have needed chemical filtration.

i never use chemical filtration!!! i have a tetra 20 packed with nothing but nylon pot scrubbers, and the magnum 250 with some pot scrubber material in the media chamber, but i'll look for ceramic rings! thanks

Chemical filtration is handy for certian conditions and removing smells but I agree with BB. It's not something you need to worry about on a daily basis.

I love the ceramic rings for the canisters because they don't restrict the water flow as much as some of the other types of media. You might also check out Ebay...they usually have fairly nice sized lots for sale from time to time. Having extra on hand is always better than having to run out at 10:00 pm searching for a box or two for that new filter.

Excuse my ignorance, but do the ceramic rings have the same concept as bioballs and scrubbers, just better at it? I saw X24 say that they have more surface area, but this surprises me thinking about how the rings are constructed.

Unlike pot scrubbers and bio balls, they have deep spoors that increases surface area and bacterial growth.

Bioballs are designed to have a large surface area and increase air contact with nitrifying bacteria.

H.O.T's media basket is small , with ceramic rings/noodles you might not be able to get many in there....my .02....I use seachem Matrix
