I want to move my retic from his rubbermaid tote to a 85 gallon tank.

I have is tote perfect, the heat and humidity are right where they should be and I am happy about that.

Now I was thinking about buying 2 large heat pads to heat up his tank. However I find that heat pads don't do well for larger invironments. So after looking up a couple things, I found these ceramic heat emitters. I have never used these before. How good are they and what brand would you recommend?

Thanks a bunch. Oh yes, to those of you who are wondering if I am still getting a skink. I will be, and I now understand why UV ligths are more money/better then a standart bulb. I will be purchasing one before my skink is bought :)

Personally I love ceramic heat emitters and I use them on all my lizard setups. Once you get by their initial price you'll be happy with them. They can last several years compared to similar sized light bulbs and they use less energy. I guess they're only downfall is that they don't produce any light and can become very, very hot. Make sure if you use them to buy a lamp housing that has a ceramic socket. I believe the brand I use is by Exo Terra.

Ok, cool stuff. I figured I was on the right track with this. Now insted of going through trial and error (thats expensive, lol) what wattage of bulb would I need for about 5.5 cubic feet of air to be raised from 70 ish degrees to 82 degrees. I plan on lowering the bulb and fixture into the tank and having the whole thing wrapped in wire mesh to prevent contact.

I think you should look at getting something between 100 and 150 watts for that size setup.

Oh great, I was thinking more in the 60 watt range..... The CHE will only be 8-10 inches from the ground.

I would use a Zoo Med ceramic heat emitter. It is a quality product that will last up to 5 years. They also are a sponsor of MFK!

From my research, a 50 watt halogen bulb 14 inches held 14 inches away will keep the spot under it at 92f.

Does anyone know what distance a CHE gives me 92f? Or should I just buy a 100 watt one and hook it up to a dimmer switch?

This is for the 85 gallon, right? I'm just going by what they're rated for. 100 watts is for up to 50 gallons. I use a 100 watt for my Ackie setup and the basking area about 5" below it gets over 120 F. So therefore if you're going for a lot lower temps, then try something around 60 watts and see how that does.

Well I was going to try the 60 watt out. and maybe have the heat pad somewhere on the other side of the cage.

I get all these ideas in my head and it's like I need to try them out. lol. I will let everyone know how my plans work.
