So I bought a new Ecosmart CFL rated 5500K 120V 27W and it burnt out in a day...I'm thinking it overheated in the light fixture I have...I used the light fixture from my old heat lamp thinking the fixture would be able to tolerate the heat more but maybe it made it worse by entrapping the heat?

Did a little looking up online and apparently they are not a good bulb for recessed fixtures where the lower plastic part of the bulb can get too hot and short, some even melt...
this is the bulb I bought...won't buy it again although I like the output of the light, now that I think about it I did notice little flickering

should last longer then a day though. i would take it back. i would look for a incandescent hood to put some bulbs in.
I found a cheapo clamp-on light at Lamps Plus and I got a 32watt 5600K CFL setup now, hopefully it'll be enough to keep my planted tank happy...
