I am not sure - if that sounds strange - but probably around twenty. Some of them may be more than ten years old. Also, in that partition, I have zebra, skunk and eos, more than fifty in all.
When you have lots of fish that makes perfect sense. Every have any breeding? Or is the big school just for the comfort of the fish?

I can't see her now, she is most definitely hiding.

There is one big skunk in there with an enormous abdomen, and I assume she is highly pregnant. I do not expect any of the fry to survive. I could plow through the tank to try to get her out, but I have not got a suitable tank to put her in, it would cause too much disruption to the partition, and probably really stress her out too.

I have previously observed similar in different setups, with pregnant modesta (they get big), in my combined cichlid and large loach partition. Never saw any fry.

I have read that breeding loaches is really difficult. I think it may be easy if you get the conditions right, have a few spare small tanks, and are fast acting.

Her being “pregnant” is not a possibility as loach do not have live young. She will be carrying eggs but not fry.
TBH I have no idea even where loach would lay their eggs or how they look after them , but I would hazard a guess as a nursery with old adult females taking turns to help raise young.

Yes, loaches do not bear live. Pregnant being ... full of eggs.
