does nayone keep these fish and if so what do you feed them. ( just trying to do my research before i go out and get one:D

never kept one.. actually have thought about it though. i believe feeders would be the best option of food. in the wild they eat fish and i dont know if theyll even take pellets or filets but you can try

i was wondering the same, kinda like a native gar. i know they dont do anything untill food passes by, but i thought they would be cool

I have never kept them myself, but from what I've heard they are hard to feed anything but live foods.

I am currently keeping Esox americanus americanus and Esox americanus vermiculatus, Redfin and Grass pickerel. The Grass are 3-4", the Redfin just an inch! Right now they are eating live only. The Grass have just stepped up to rosies, from guppies. The Redfins came in eating daphnia. One is a little larger and was able to take down a small feeder guppy right away. I had to start the smaller one on free-swimming guppy fry.
I won't try to convert them until they're a bit thicker. I believe it is possible though. While I've never kept these two species of Esox before, I have kept Esox masquinongy, Muskie, and it accepted frozen pretty readily once about 7-8".
I'll be posting some pictures and videos soon.

I have kept chain pickerel many times. Generally I keep them with sunfish and a variety of perch. They will take nearly anything they can fit in their mouths and some things they can't. It was not uncommon for me to feed them well on minnows only to wake up the next day with a huge bulge in their belly and I'm down one perch half the pickerel's size.
