ok i am really looking to get a pair of senegal chameleons but i cant find answers to thse questions so i thght i could get some knowledge from someone with experience
1). what should i use as a substrate (preferable very econimical)
2). are there any plants that chams cant have in their enclosure i have some sort of croton an an umbrella plant these are ok right?
3). how big will these guys get
4). if i get 2 will they be compatible or will they do better solitary?
5). how long do these guys live ?
thanks for the help :nilly:

I was going to let others jump in here since my experience is mainly in panthers (which may be a better starting cham if this might be your first), but you seem to be eager for an answer. So senegals will grow to a size of around 6-8 inches. Males will get into territorial disputes so if you end up with a pair of mature males, you'll be better off housing them separately. I would personally house them separately but thats just me. Substrate is not totally necessary so it doesn't get more economical than that. If you feel the need to use a substrate I would suggest coco fiber which you can find at any pet store in compressed bricks. Avoid the bark substrates though or your cham might get impacted. I don't know about the plants that you have but pothos make pretty good live plants in cham enclosures. Lifespan for healthy senegals could run up to 12 years (reportedly). Hope I helped out just a little and happy cham keeping.

ok thx can you tell the difference between males and females at around 6 inches

Probing would be the best way to sex them but if you're not experienced and you don't have the correct sized tool, there are other ways. First being inspecting the vent. males will have 2 hemipenal bulges and of course females will lack those. Senegals also display sexual dimorphism in their pattern and coloration at times. There was a really good site that had a chart for senegal pattern/coloration, but I can't seem to find it. I'll do a little more searching and I'll post a link if I do find it. Senegals also reach sexual maturity fairly quickly so you would probably be able to sex them within their first year.
