My chancho has grown a bit over the past two months I got him/her from Reagan. I was initially thinking this was a male, due to head shape and body structure. However, I am not so sure anymore -- anyone care to venture a guess?

Specifically, as you can see in the pics. below, I see some black in his/her dorsal fin, which is a trademark of many amphilophus females. Or that does not hold true for this species?

Here are the pics:

Looks male to me (judging by a couple vent shots). Hard to tell without a close of view of its goodies!

Agree!

Thanks for the replies guys.

Looks male. It was one of the bigger of the spawn so I am almost sure it will be male.

The black blotch on the dorsal fin is what got me thinking that it might not be -- maybe that doesn't apply to chancho then.

Not the same as Tri's

Take a look at these two pics maybe they will help. You can see my female has a good sized un-interupted black blotch at the front of her dorsal. The male on the other hand has a little black as well but it looks like an extension of a couple of his vertical bars like yours.
I agree with cchhcc, from what you can see of the vent in your shots I would say male.

Thanks for the explanation -- that actually makes sense! I didn't notice that the black on the dorsal fin of my fish isn't as much as this female, but only an extension as you say.

BTW, I am totally jealous of your chancho line -- I really dig the yellow/light color on him. The headshape is amazing too!
