Just made the change in my 55 from gravel to sand. I of course have my filters off, but how long do you think it will take for the sand to settle? How long until the water becomes clear again?

Thanks.

if you cleaned out your sand before hand it doesn't take long at all for your sand to settle also the more cores the sand the faster the settling.

Do a continual water change to speed this up, run a siphon house out into the yard and run a you python or garden hose into the tank and just let em run keeping an eye not to suck up sand or anything. This will save you alot in the long run too because you'll eventually want all that dust that lingers for day out of the tank anyway otherwise it pulverizes your filter pumps

You think it would be ok for my fish to be in there while the sand settles? I don't really have enough space to house them elsewhere for the time being.

What do you mean, "the more cores the sand the faster he settling"?

I think he was trying to say, "The more coarse the sand, the faster it settles." And he is correct. Rinsing the sand helps to remove a lot of the smaller particles that will float and cloud your tank. Give it a few days and it will go away. Water changes help too.

depends on how much clay is in the sand. If it is just sand it should settle fairly fast maybe within the hour, if there is a lot of clay it could take weeks with many water changes.
