The tank is a 125 gallon Oceanic. The substrate is rinsed lava rock with river rock from Lowes over the top of it.

I like it but am considering going over the top of that with an inch layer of pool sand. I have drift wood that I have gathered locally and treated.

Are there any concerns that I should have with going over the top of the gravel and lava rock with the pool sand?

that sounds fine, but whats up with the bio wheel in the tank?

I dropped it in there from old tank. I didnt want it to dry out and will use it on a new tank in the future.

good idea, keep the bb alive and happy.

Thanks. Anyone else with insight concerning adding the sand? Should I remove the lava rock and gravel first?

I would think the sand will eventually settle in the cracks between the river & lava rock. Probably not a huge deal, but you might like the look of it better if the sand is in first with the rock on top of it.
