I recently read a post asking the best way to change from gravel to sand . I read one way i like
1 clean sand
2 put in on gravel
3 when you clean tank or when you like scoop bottom of tank and clean through collinder or strainer so only sand goes through . then you have gravel left in strainer

This worked for me and i did a 250g 9 ft tank in 1hr it took a day to settle properly but job done really happy with results as have always liked the sand look

Just curious. Why didn't you remove gravel then add sand?

I removed my gravel and then put the sand in.... It made one big mess. Then the tank proceeded to crashed because I (apparently) removed the majority of my "good bacteria." That sounds much easier, but I think I would've left the sand in the tank for about a week before removing the gravel. Let us know if you have any issues!

Did not remove gravel first as the driftwood area took me ages to arrange and i liked it so gravel still under back section !!!! Thats a job for much much later !!! when i get that feeling i must change tank around

I am wanting to change the gravel to sand also in my 150 gallon tank. However, I can barely reach the bottom to vacuum the gravel during the weekly water changes. How would you suggest removing the gravel? I estimate there in 200 lbs on the bed of the aquarium. I stand on a platform to make it easier for the water changes since the tank and stand is so tall.

a dust pan or a strainer on a stick

tank looks good what type of sand did you use

When i changed from gravel to sand i removed the gravel first... but when i was all done putting all the sand in i turned my sump on again and had no change in water params. it was probably due to most of my BB in the sump.

either way it takes a good portion of the day to remove/add the sand and gravel.

i used pool filter sand which settled almost instantly
