I have not changed my emperor 400 cartridges in like 3 months. Is there even a reason to change them? I will pull them out on occaion an clean them in aquarium water.

Only if the filter pads wear out and are not catching debris, or if you want to replace the carbon. Carbon does "fill up" and lose it's capacity to capture organics in the water. So it all really depends on your opinion of carbon usage.
Carbon in the cartridge depletes in less than a month.I haven't used carbon in seven years.Iuse a product called chemipure.It lasts alot longer than carbon.I also buy large sheets of filter pads and cut my own to fit in the 400.
