How can I change my filter without causing a cycle? Going from HOB to canister. Recently changed my substrate also. Doing a complete overhaul. However I do have established tanks ( others in addition to this one) that are running if that helps. All currently have hob n will eventually be canister. Thanks.

Can you run them side by side till the cannister catches up? Won't be a 2 minute solution though.

What kind of HOB and what kind of canister? Need to seed the canister with media from the HOB. Then run both filters on the tank for a while and slowly remove all the media from the HOB. IMO it would be better to just run both.

Well I bought some quilt batting. I'm gonna use that in the trays of the canister. I cut some pieces of that and stuck that in the filters of my other three established tanks. One w a higher bio load than I plan on having in the tank w the new filter. Hopefully that seeds it some. I also have ceramic rings in mesh bags inside all those tanks that will also be used in the new filter. I'm in the process of finishing my basement and I want to wait till I clean up a little better before I set up the new filter. Problem is the tank is going into a wall and once it's done there will be no place for an HOB to fit so I will have to swap them out. I guess I'll have to set up the canister ahead of time. How long is long enough as far as running them together? Thanks.
